St. John’s, Manchester

DEPARTMENT IS A NEW CONCEPT WORKPLACE BRAND FROM ALL WORK & SOCIAL. ALLIED LONDON COMPLETED THE CAT A REFURBISHMENT OF THE GRADE 2 LISTED BONDED WAREHOUSE IN JUNE 2018 AND PROGRESSED THE CAT B FIT-OUT.

Originally constructed in 1869, as a six storey brick warehouse, the new Bonded Warehouse has retained its heritage features, whilst incorporating all requirements for a tech enabled office hub. Through new material interventions and restoration of the industrial fabric, Allied London have carefully crafted an individual workplace aesthetic.

The third level floorplate acts as the heart of Department, an enterprise hub for small t0 medium sized businesses. A new mezzanine block inserted into the existing goods hall creates additional work suites, whilst still enabling the impressive volume to be read as a single space. The original articulated brick vaulted ceiling sails above the crittal glazed interventions and a new ‘street’ down the centre is animated as a break-out space for the Department members.

A clubhouse and meeting room suites, located on the second level, provide additional facilities and shared spaces for all members. Levels four to six are dedicated to traditional occupiers looking for a workspace unit that breaks convention. The 1800s warehouse was once an important place for industry, these layers of working and collaborating, for businesses of differing sizes, will ensure that the Bonded Warehouse becomes that once again.
